Check The Grading

Before beginning any moisture remediation under your house, it’s crucial to check the grading outside. The goal is to direct water away from the foundation.

The ideal slope is 6 inches for every 10 feet. Use a level to measure the slope of the ground around your home. If the slope is less than 6 inches, additional grading may be needed.

Observe the ground for any low spots or depressions that could collect water near the foundation. These can be filled in with soil or gravel to create a more uniform slope.

Ensure that downspouts are properly extended. They should direct water at least 4 feet away from the foundation. If downspouts are not extended, water can pool around the foundation and seep into the crawlspace or basement.

Finally, check for any cracks or gaps in the foundation. These can allow water to enter the crawlspace or basement. Seal any cracks or gaps with caulk or hydraulic cement.
